There's no guide info on my TV at the moment so it's as the title says. If I find something good/passable I stick to it.

Currently watching The New Adventures of Superman. It's the episode where Clarke's powers are transferred to Lois and she becomes Ultra Woman. Martha Kent makes her a costume. This is the conversation Lois and Clarke have when Lois first appears as a superhero.
Clarke: Nice costume.
Lois: It's really tight.
Clarke: Yeah, Mum says it cuts down on...
Lois: -wind resistance, yes I know.

If wind resisitance is such a problem why are you wearing enormous capes??
Seriously.
I mean Spiderman doesn't wear a cape cos he really needs to be flexible and quick. Batman does because it helps him be mysterious and it apparently works as a handglider sometimes. Superman however can fly at supersonic speeds, at least, at that point I'm not sure wind resistance is an issue.

The episode is fairly amusing, the villians are two sisters who bicker and are sarcastic at each other. The actresses are really familiar but I don't quite know who they are.
It's pretty funny to see Clarke cutting himself and feeling pain. And seeing Superman arriving on the scene in a taxi.

Lois proposes to Clarke at the end but she has bought herself a ring and then wears it. That seems like cheating, which is why I didn't do that.

Now there's a really strange episode of what appears to be Robin of Sherwood, with Richard O'Brien playing the horror-movie, mad scientist type of character he usually plays. Robin appears to have turned blond and has an evil clone and I just have no idea what's happening.

Oh well onto the next channel.

A new member of the family... [Jul. 4th, 2008|02:42 pm]

_tonylee_
A week or so back we talked about Shotgun Samurai being put back together? Well, one of the things we knew that we'd need to do if we were going to get this scheduled quickly amongst the other work we had, was to get in a colourist. Someone who 'got' us.

And so we put the call out and when we had responses, we gave them sample pages to colour. Some were never heard from again. Some were so terrible they looked like they had been done by crayon. Some were incredibly good.

It was an incredibly tough choice, but in the end due to a variety of reasons we decided on one winner, the incredibly talented Kelli Gilbert.
She got what we were trying to do from the very start, was fast, friendly and in the sequentials she nailed what Dan was trying to achieve.

So welcome aboard, Kelli. It's going to be a wild ride!

Phoney kids [Jul. 4th, 2008|11:11 am]

I like to think I'm pretty smart.

Granted, I recently got outfoxed by a ten year old...

JmC: "Stupid bastard bloody can. Open! OPEN! Goddamn ringpull piece of sh..."
Kai: "You're not allowed to swear around me."
JmC: "I'm not? Buggering hell. Says who?"
Kai: "Says Mum. (Megan) You have to pay a pound for every swear word."
JmC: "I do? Da.. uh, fu.. uh, gosh that's harsh. Yeah, why not. Pound seems pretty steep though."
Kai: "I am ten."
JmC: "Oh, like you don't know all the words anyway."
Kai: "I don't know that B one you said."
JmC: "What, buggering?"
Kai: "Ha! Pound!"
JmC: (glowering as he hands over a quid) ".... you're adopted, you know."
Kai:(happily) "Am not!"
JmC: "Well you should be."

And you might see this as a minor glitch (rashafragging Machiavellian frikkin preteens) but now I'm being outsmarted by my own mobile phone. The phone, you see, besides having a variety of functions that I do not, and will not ever understand has taken to playing with me. Sometimes, when it appears to have sent a message it, in fact, has shunted the message to the "Outbox" folder. You would think such a folder would attempt to send its contents at the next possible opportunity. You would think there would be an alert that informed you that your last message is not zooming via satellite but sitting inert in your phone folder.

No.

There are none of these. So, as has happened in the past. I assume that my message is gone. Which means that not only do they think I am rude for not responding but I think the very same thing! It is only when I am expecting a swift message response and dick around with my phone that I find that my message has not been sent. Fucking bastard piece of shit.

I suspect it hates me for the ringtones I make it play and is trying to destroy my personal relationships. It seems we are playing mind-games, my phone and I. So far it is winning...

I see you have come to this battle of wits unarmed!

Been watching much You Tube lately? Hope it wasn't owt too dodgy. Remember, copyright infringement is terrorism, on the web. Hey, it's not like they'll be recording everything every web user does, right? Oh, wait, no, that's in the pipeline.

In other news, it's the weekend. Nearly. Dinner tonight, coriander & lime salmon on the stone grill yum-yum, to be preceded by mozzarella & strong cheddar stuffed grilled portabello mushrooms. And probably quite a lot of wine :)

The Long Wait.... [Jul. 4th, 2008|10:24 am]

_tonylee_

Yesterday was a long one.

The day? Passable, did writing, worked on a few things, worked on San Diego stuff, worked on the column. Then, around 3.30pm I drove down to London to meet up with [info]budgie_uk and the delectable [info]belle_fille1982 - found Budgie in Charlotte Street after parking up following a surprisingly stress free journey and we found Trace closer to the Recording Theatre.

Now together, we joined the queue for the Now Show taping for tonight (July 4th).

I won't give away spoilers but it wasn't one of their best although they did have several laugh out loud moments. And, with the show taking an hour and a half and now needing to be shrunk to 25 minutes, it'll probably suddenly become a whole lot better. It was good to see it all though and Punt and Dennis were on form as ever.

Once that was over we were all invited to stay another 45 minutes to be 'audience extras' in a scene for an episode of Jack Dee's second series of his sitcom Lead Balloon, where he's on a Radio 4 quizshow. Jack came out at the start and did a small routine while the crew set up and then we pretended to be much more highbrow than we really were! And you might even see us in the audience!

From there it was off to the London Creators drinkup only to find that at just past ten there were no London Creators - obviously we in Birmingham are far more hardcore than they are - and Budgie left for home around 11pm.

Trace and I wandered to a more quiet and empty pub so we could get at least an hour together and then I dropped her at Tottenham Court Road just before midnight and walked to my car.

And then the day got a little bit crapper.

The A40 is notorious for delays at the moment due to bridge works, but we sailed through those. I was actually making good time and then we hit another set of, well, something - they'd closed the A40 at the Hanger Lane underpass, we had to come off and then come back on for a further mile of one lane traffic. Which meant that travelling up to Hanger Lane? We had to drop from three lanes to one.

Suffice to say that the three hundred yards it took to get to Park Royal from the first '300 yards'  sign? Took me an hour. And once past, we were still crawling. And Hanger Lane? I saw no roadwords being done whatsoever!

In the end I got in around 2.45am, utterly shattered. But even though it was a shitty journey, it was worth it. A quick check of emails before bed and -

Oh, wait.

IDW had sent me the Doctor Who: The Forgotten #1 proofs to read through. And this included art I'd not seen before. So I had to read it. And then I realised that the letters had been done from an earlier draft and needed to be altered here and there, so I had to email IDW and let them know. And by the time I'd done?

Around 3.30am...

Still I'm up and writing and I'm going to the gym in a moment to wake myself up properly, as it'll be a late one for me work wise. It's July 4th in the US so I don't expect the comic to be re-lettered today, but even with the proof alterations to be done, it's an incredible read. With Pia's art, I was having goosebumps - and I wrote the bloody thing!

Mixed day.

Hancock was very well done, I thought, but I won't spoil it for people by discussing here.
And I has geekshinies for the PS3 turning up tomorrow (if ShittyLink does its job).

Work was rubbish. After clearing down all the customer stuff on Tues, and being a project ninja on Weds, I was again reduced to playing catchup with the customers again today and accomplishing a metric fuckall (that's 1.277 imperial fuckalls, for those using old units).
And now I'm looking at the wedding invitations on my desk wondering what I do about a "+guest" wedding invite with an RSVP of the 11th July, but a wedding date of 27th Sept, in Cardiff of all places.
(Yes, I know. It's the simple things that fuck me up. Say an e-commerce site has been hacked and every machine in the cluster is dead and I can cope, but tell me we're out of milk and there's no-where we can buy any right now and I'll twitch like a mofo. *rolleyes*)

2 memories of the w/e stick out as making me chuckle more than the norm when around Lou and Hannah

1. Hannah acting like a cat getting ready to go out. She went and scratched the wall to file her nail

2. Hannah "If you make cupa soup in a bowl the whole universe will implode" Obviously I put forward the thought that maybe someone has made it in a bowl and it just didn't implode the universe. But we just thought that was nonesense

Life on Mars (US) [Jul. 3rd, 2008|11:31 am]

_tonylee_
Just watched a pre-air DVD of David E Kelly's Life On Mars US remake. I was expecting a nightmare of an adaptation, but you know what? I't ain't half bad.

It's weird watching new people in established roles, but Colm Meaney does a good DC Hunt and the Los Angeles backdrop helps take you away from the grubby streets of Manchester.

Whereas the UK version was a homage to things like The Sweeney, this is more aimed at the world of The Streets of San Francisco, Kojak or Starsky and Hutch. Small things have been changed, Americanised, even - but the pilot is almost line for line the same plots and subplots as the original UK version and it works surprisingly well.

With a larger episode count than the BBC show per season (the entire season will be more than the combined entire UK series) there's more chances to explore other areas of Sam Tyler's world. And you know what? I think, when it starts to come out, I'll be along for the ride...

EDIT - And then again maybe not. I think I'll forget the above statement... Thanks [info]diffrentcolours for this...

While NASA is having success searching for signs of 'life on Mars,' American TV viewers could have a tougher time finding the U.S. version of the similarly titled BBC detective show. The classic Brit production featured John Simm as a Manchester detective. After being hit by a car in 2006, he wakes up in 1973 and must take up his police work then and there until he can figure out how to get back to his own time.

With a strong fan base, an Emmy and a BAFTA to its credit, ABC took notice and set up a U.S. remake written and produced by David E. Kelley (Boston Legal, Ally McBeal, etc.). The show was originally held back and almost halted completely by the writers strike. But, Kelley did pen and produce a pilot episode. When that script and scenes from the production hit the web, the reception was uniformly brutal.

Now, ABC trashed the pilot, and Kelley is off the show. It's being rewritten, moved from a Los Angeles setting to New York, and recast from scratch. It's all part of a last-ditch effort to save a series ABC had high hopes for when it worked out the remake rights.

Busy doing nothing [Jul. 3rd, 2008|10:15 am]

flywingedmonkey
Busy, busy, busy.

I am, in fact, so busy that I have discovered that I have gone through the other side of busy to the state of doing absolutely fuck-all.

Now we are not talking about my normal ability to do fuck-all in the face of work here. That is a combination of idleness, apathy and the attention span of a butterfly with ADD. I am used to that. I'm excellent at that. My doing-nothing-fu is so strong that I am a nothing-ninja. I cut class like a razorblade, buzz around fruitlessly like a bee. I can waste huge chunks of time (lots of it on this very journal!) and, not only that, make it look like I am working. Even now I write this post as a message on Microsoft Outlook so an observer thinks I am writing an e-mail. Fear my work-avoidance skills!

However as I'm in a new job I'm making the effort to actually achieve, thus the busy. But I have taken on (and by "taken on" I mean much has been thrust at me and I've stapled my go-to face on and smiled "Suuuuure! Why that hell not?" even though a)I have not the time and b)know not what the merry fuck they actually want me to do. Win.) so much that I've rendered myself inert. I flit from project to project apparently working, hell, it certainly feels like I'm working, but getting nothing done. Nothing! I'm like a rodent in a wheel but without the fun (they love that shit. If you could you would hear "Eye of the Tiger" running through their tiny ratty brains.) Yesterday worked and I worked and I have done NOTHING. Fuck, man.

But enough. Today I shall regulate. I shall ignore e-mails. I shall divert my phone. I shall stop attempting to assist everyone. I will have breaks (like this one). I shall hide in a backroom to do my Project Plan. And I certainly won't take on any work today.

I shall do less in order to do more.

On The Radio... [Jul. 3rd, 2008|10:07 am]

_tonylee_

So. Last night I was a 'Special Guest Presenter' on the Destiny Radio Network's Sci Fi Guys show, at www.dtrn.co.uk. The indubitable Stuart Claw of London Expo and the Anime Network (to name but a couple) fame held the fort while I joined him on a variety of subjects. Was I in the studio? No. By the wizzy wozzy magic of telephonic communications, I did the show pretty much like this.

The show started at 8pm and Stuart promised me that with no solid format or show to follow it, usually the show was an hour, hour and a half max, going out live across the world. I could do that, I felt. And the phone's battery wouldn't die within an hour.

No, it wouldn't - but it would however die twice in the three hours that the show ended up running for - I ended up having to run downstairs while on the radio and swap phones during a recorded spot, and then return to the original, slightly recharged phone during the final recorded piece. But apparently I didn't sound too bad, considering that I didn't have an earthly clue what was going on.

Luckily I was able to hold my own in the movies / TV discussion, standing up for Mark Millar and (surprisingly for many) actually arguing that Russell T Davis is a good writer, citing shows like Casanova and The Second Coming. We talked about Doctor Who, there were spoilers, and of course I talked about Hope Falls, Shotgun Samurai, Rough Trade (and the TV show Burn Notice) and Doctor Who: The Forgotten, possibly my most candid interview yet on the subject. People I know emailed in and I was forced to explain about Rollerblade Rabbit and Cattitude Cat amongst other things.

But a three hour (technically) phone conversation later, it was over. I had a blast, guys. Always happy to do that again. I don't think the show's on the archive yet, but for people who missed it live? As soon as I hear it's up, I'll let you know.

And so today. Following working until 11pm yesterday I've taken it easy so far - but I'm going to do some scripting, some of Monday's groundbreaking column and then this afternoon I'm off to London to meet up with [info]belle_fille1982 and the oh, so lovely [info]budgie_uk who, for my birthday has got us all tickets to the recording of Friday's The Now Show. Huzzah! And then after that I may make the London Comic Creators drink, but it's all in the air and dependant on how long the radio taping lasts.

Because lets face it - Yesterday? That radio taping went on for much longer than expected... :-)
